PHYSICAL CULTURE

Display by Mr. A. Jenkins’s Pupils Over 100 performers took part in a remarkable display of poise, balance and physical development by pupils of Mr. A. Jenkins at the Wellington Town Hall Concert Chamber on Saturday night. The programme opened with horizontal-bar drill by the senior men, who showed considerable skill and timing. Physical drill by the junior boys was of a high standard. One of the most impressive turns of the evening was the pyramid-building by the senior men. Horse-vaulting by the senior boys was followed by a fencing exhibition by T. Wilson and R. Messinger. An acrobatic dance by Shirley Jenkins was daintily performed. Sabre fighting by T. >» >l- - and R. Messinger was followed by antics by the clowns which were extremely funny and produced some high-class acrobatics. Messrs. A. Jenkins, J. C. Steel, I-I. Pepper, E. Warner and Shirley, Ralph and Pat Jenkins combined in the most difficult and entertaining item of the evening, hand-to-hand balancing. Some remarkable feats of strength were performed. Dumb-bell drill by the boys, exhibitions of ju-jitsu by A. Jenkins and D. Potter, and acrobatics by the girls’ class were all interesting. Further items were ladder pyramid building, physical drill by the girls, and an exhibition of bodybuilding exercises by Messrs. A. Jenkins and J. C. Steel. Tumbling by the boys’ class concluded the .entertainment. The programme was put through without a hitch, and with the aid of coloured lights focused on the stage the whole demonstration was very effective. An orchestra accompanied the performers and also kept the audience entertained between items.
