LICENSEES’ DUTIES

Wellington Committee’s Warning The quarterly meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee was held yesterday. There were present: Mr. j. 11. Luxford, S.M. (chairman), Messrs. R. Darroch, W. H. Denton, W. I. Clark and F. P. Walsh. “The committee,” the chairman said, “has considered the report submitted by the police, and considers that it is unfortunate that there have been so many convictions under the Licensing Act.” He referred to the fact that 29 persons had been convicted of being on licensed premises after hours, and that there had been four convictions under the Gaming Act. “I submit,” lie continued, “that this shows one of two things, (1) a lack of supervision by the licensees, or (2) illegal practice. The licensees have definite duties to perform, and if they fail it is only their own fault if they place their licences in jeopardy.” The chairman added that reports on the licences held in the various districts under the committee’s supervision were almost completed. It was hoped to have the reports ready by March, when there would be something further to say.

The following transfers were granted;—Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, William George Pope to Albert Gordon Ward; Masonic Hotel, Luke James Spellman to George Harold Bennett. John Ryan was granted a further three months in the Metropolitan Hotel.
