CARE OF ANIMALS
Efforts of S.P.C.A. to Better Conditions INCREASED INTEREST Those imbued with the desire to better the lot of domestic and other animals in the Wellington district would appear ot ba a growing band. The attendance at the forty-third annual meeting of the ’Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Ann mals last night was described by the chairman, Mr. J. R. Salt, as one of the largest he had seen for some years. During the past year the inspector had been very active, and had performed excellent work in both town and country districts, stated the report. He attended to 495 cases which were of sufficient importance to report to the committee, and to numerous others of a minor nature. Not only did the inspector seek out cases of cruelty, but by expert advice given frequently be improved their condition. The committee received £2OO from the estate of the late Mrs. H. F. Von Haast, £3O from the estate of the late Miss Florence Jackson, and £25 from the T. G. Macarthy Trust. The sum of £213/19/6 was also received on account of the amount bequeathed to the society by the late Mr. A. R. Atkinson, and these bequests assisted very materially in the carrying on of the society’s work. After a great deal of research and consideration by all the members of the federation a number of Bills bad been prepared for submission to the next session of Parliament. These included the Protection of Birds Bill, the Registration of Dogs Bill, the Animals Anesthetics Bill, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Bill. If these Bills were passed they would place the work of the societies on a much more satisfactory basis, and go a long way toward eliminating cruelty to animals in this Dominion. Officers were elected as follows: — Patron. Lord Galway; president, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop; vice-presidents, Rev. W. Tye and Mr. W. Watson; chairman of committee, Mr. J. R. Salt; treasurer, Mr. H. J. Simmonds; committee, Miss Robertson. Mesdames Taylor, C. H. Seville. Messrs. H. F. Von Haast, J. Staples. AV. Forsyth, W. B. Bennett, W. Barke, J. H. Howell, and P. F. Hazeldon.
A redrafted constitution was adopted unanimously. Members paid a tribute to the work of the society's inspector, Mr. R. A. Nicol, and.placed on record appreciation of his services.
