M.C.C. FACES UPHILL FIGHT

Third Day’s Cricket at Sydney MUST GET 352 TO-DAY TO DEFEAT N.S.W. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright (Received November 16, 10.30 p.m.) Sydney, November 16. The weather was cool for the third day of the cricket match between England and New South Wales. The wicket was wearing. The attendance was 8760. New South Wales, in its second innings, made 326. and England in its second strike had lost two wickets for 95 when stumps were drawn. Play in the period before lunch was very peaceful. Chipperfield and McGilvray batted sedately, most of the runs scored being in ones and twos. McGilvray, after an unimpressive innings. was bowled round his legs. McCabe, who had Fingleton to run for him, was also restrained, but he was no doubt handicapped by a groin injury and could not use his feet properly. At lunch England looked a beaten side. Its bowlers completely lacked sting and the fielding was ragged. New South Wales at this stage was 326 runs ahead with five wickets in hand, and with the wicket becoming dusty and developing patches England faced an apparently hopeless task. Chipperfield, in the morning, batted slowly and safely, reaching .fifty after 137 minutes. McCabe punished anything loose, and after a fine lighting knock in which he hit five boundaries he was brilliantly caught at forward short leg by the rival skipper. Chipperfield and McCabe added 96 runs for the sixth wicket. Bats With One Eye Closed. Chipperfield progressed in very tedious fashion and had reached 86 when the last man, Oldfield, came in. Oldfield bad not intended batting as one of his eyes was closed as a result of a heavy cold. Nevertheless he played really well, until yorkered. Chipperfield "had crept to 97, and when the innings closed be had been in 227 minutes. His runs included ouly five fours. New South Wales's innings occupied 311 minutes. None of the English bowlers was very impressive. England began its uphill fight at 4.15 p.m., requiring 447 runs to win. A new opening pair, Worthington and Barnett, started cautiously but the former soon opened out, scoring 28, including six boundaries, .in 35 minutes, before he was completely beaten by O'Reilly, who thus had one for none. O’Reilly continued to bowl with remarkable accuracy and in eight succeeding overs only six runs were scored off him. His average should have been two for seven, Marks missing an easy catch in midfield when Barnett skied a ball. Hammond was most subdued when opposed by the spin bowlers, taking 50 minutes to reach double figures. Both batsmen then settled down and were batting more confidently when Barnett was run out just before strimps. Details: NEW SOUTH WALES. First innings 273 Second Innings. J. H. Fingleton, 1.b.w., b.
