DEATH OF MAORI CHIEFTAINESS
Big Gathering at Pakipaki By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, November 16. Maoris and pakehns over 1000 in number participated yesterday at Pakipaki in the concluding stages of the tangl and funeral ceremonies following the death of the chieftainess Pukepuke Tongiora Mohi, the gathering being one of the biggest of its kind held in the district for a number of years. The Native population of the whole of the North Island was fully represented, many tribes having a strong representation, and, in addition, there was a big quota of pakeha representatives from all parts of the province. Tlbe proceedings were conducted by members of the Ratana Church, and a service was held at the Pakipaki Church, which was given to the Maoris of the district by the late chieftainess. Afterward the body was interred in the Native burial grounds.
