CARNIVAL WEEK

Joy in Christchurch “It was a happy sight to see many thousands of the people enjoying to the full the varied pleasures provided for them during carnival week in Christchurch,” remarked the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. E. Parry, yesterday. The Minister speut last week in Christchurch —his first visit for many years—and returned to Wellington yesterday delighted at the manner in which the southerners catered for the comfort and enjoyment of visitors from both islands who thronged the accommodation and attractions of the annual event. “I met people in Christchurch who had come from all parts of the Dominion,” said Mr. Parry, “and well did they take advantage of the excellent arrangements made for their entertainment and pleasure. The Royal Show and the national cup meetings drew I heir thousands of happy patrons. A notable feature of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting well merits emulation by other and less prosperous clubs. Each day of I lie meeting, after the seventh race had been run, the club authorities threw oi>en the gates of the outer course. A large number of people accepted the courtesy of the privilege to enter the grounds free of charge to see the last event. The concourse of people on the lawns and in front of .the totalizators was one of the largest I have ever seen on a New Zealand trotting track. “But it was the general happiness and contentment of the people that stirred one to enthusiasm. Shopkeepers told me that people seemed to bare more security and confidence iu ilie future; they showed no timidity in making their purchases, and were inclined to ask for articles which had been probably for long beyond their purse ”
