News and Notes The Cornwall Cup yachting contest this season will be begun at Tauranga on January 4. * * * It has been calculated that the New Zealand golf championships caused at least £l5OO to be spent in one way and another by visiting competitors in New Plymouth. * * * A Dominion “Learn to Switn AAeek” in December is proposed by the Auckland Swimming centre, which intends sending a recommendation to that effect to the New Zealand Council. « * * The Auckland yachting season will be officially opened on November 21, when combined club races will be held on both the AVaitemata and Manukau Harbours. “Rowin'* is the most amateur of all amateur sport,” declared Mr. E. J. McLauchlan president of the Invercargill Rowing Club, at the annual meeting ot members. "Members of rowing clubs get nothing out of it except exercise and good fellowship. All moneys won go to the club funds for the purchase of new plant.” Tlie Auckland Water Polo Control Board has appointed Mr. .1. Enwnght as coach and sole selector for the season. The nominations for the season s competitions in Auckland are:—A grade: A\ alternate Ponslonby (two teams), Kurth Shore, and Mount Eden. B grade: AVaitemata, Parnell, Ponsonby, University, Eastern Suburbs, and North Shore.
