NEGRO MAGISTRATE
First in New York The first negro magistrate ever to have held the office was sworn in recently by the mayor of New York. Mr. Myles Paige is a negro lawyer. He is a graduate of Harvard, and the news of bis appointment has given the greatest satisfaction to the 327.000 members of his race who live in New York. ( There have been negroes in the police force for some time; ' seems natural and right that the magistracy should follow. Mr. Paige is only 38. He is a leader of charitable and social good works in Harlem, and was for some years in charge of workmen’s compensation eases at the district attorney’s office.
