THIRSTY PLANTS

That Won’t Tolerate Drought

Dahlias are among the thirstiest of plants. If allowed to go dry at the roots thev suffer seriously. In hot weather they need watering twice a week at least.

Begonias are also exceedingly sensitive to drought. So, too, are bedding calceolarias, stocks, asters, petunias, verbena and phlox Drummondii.

Among border flowers delphiniums are water-needing plants. Their display soon ends if they get dry. Sweet peas are also thirsty subjects. Roses are not so much in need of water in loamy soil, but in sandy ground they need plenty of water. The above plants, in particular, are helped if mulched, or, failing that, if the soil above their roots is hoed regularly.
