CONTRACT BRIDGE ASSOCIATION

Wellington Division Annual Meeting

The annual general meeting of the New Zealand Contract Bridge Association, Wellington division, was held in the club room this week, when there was a large attendance of members. Mr. E. J. Fawcett, who presided, reported that the membership was 155. The year had been a successful one, and all competitions had been keenly contested. The pairs ladder, contested on alternate Tuesdays, was headed by Mrs. W. E. Rawson and Mrs. Eric Johnston, with Miss C. Bunny and Mrs. W. J. Hutchison second, and Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Young in third place. Recreation evenings had been held on alternate Tuesdays, the prizes being .crystal goblets. Any player who managed to win a total of six goblets during the year was presented with a crystal jug to match, and these jugs had been won by Mrs. W. J. Hutchison and Mrs. G. F. Jackson. The team at the top of the fours ladder was Dr. and Mrs. Hutchison, Miss C. M. Bunny and Mr. W. B. Rainey, while the team comprised of Mr. and Mrs. Young and Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Duncan was second. The other teams of four competition was won by the team captained by Mr. H. Burns (Burns, Cresswell, Wilson, and Phillips). The women’s afternoon tournament was won by the team captained by Mrs. Eric Johnston (Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. H. H. McLean, Mrs. H. Wilkinson, and Mrs. Winton Brown). The election of officers for the coming year resulted :—President, Mr. J. G. McDermont; vice-presidents, Mrs. Ashley Duncan and Mr. G. F. Maxfield; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. Schneider; committee, Mrs. Erie Johnston, Mrs. G. F. Jackson. Mr. E. R. Render, and Mr. AL S. Arthur. During the evening a presentation was made to the retiring president and his wife (Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Fawcett) as a mark of regard and in recognition of their work for the association.
