OBITUARY

Mr. J. FL Mentiplay

The death has occurred, suddenly of Mr. James Henry Mentiplay, of 62 .Pirie Street, Wellington, at the age of 78. Mr 5 . Mentiplay, who was a retired banker, was the oldest member of the Wellington Bowling Club. He was born at Valparaiso, Chile, 79 years ago yesterday, aud camo ,to New Zealand at the age of seven with his parents, who settled at Invercargill. He came to Wellington when 19 years of age, and joined the Bank of Australasia. He joined the Bank of New Zealand in 1883, and went to Blenheim as accountant in ISS9. He returned to Wellington iu 1893 as assistant accountant, and became a member of the Wellington Bowling Club in that year. In 1895 ho was promoted to auditor’s accountant at the head office, and served for a time at Sydney. In 1904 he became accountant in the Web lington branch, a. position he held until 1910. He was then on the relieving staff for a time, aud was appointed manager of the Westport branch in 1913. He retired from there in 1920 and spent the rest of his life in Wellington. Mr. Mentiplay was a keen oarsman in bls youth, but was best known in Wellington as a bowler. He was secretary of the Wellington Bowling Club from 1896 to 1902, vice-president in 1908-9, and president in 1909-10. He was present at the opening of the club on Saturday', October 10, and rolled the first bowl as the oldest member, Mr. A. Hamilton, who joined a year after him, rolling the second bowl. Mr. Mentiplay is survived by a widow, two daughters, and two sous. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended by members of the Wellington Bowling Club, Bank of New Zealand, and friends.

Mr. F. H. Revell

The death occurred at a private hospital in Upper Hutt, of Mr. Frederick Henry Revell, of Karaka Bay, aged OS years. . Mr. Revell, who was born in Masterton, came to Wellington with his parents as a child and was educated in the city. After leaving school, he went to Hawke’s Bay, and was engaged in farming there for over lo years. On retiring he lived in Auckland for five years. Mr. Revell then went to reside in Hamilton, and for some seven years conducted a land and estate agency. His wife died in Hamilton about 12 years ago. Since leaving Hamilton he had been in business in Wellington as a manufacturers’ agent, during which period he resided in Karaka Buy. Mr. Revell leaves one daughter, Miss Margaret Revell, of Karaka Bay.
