TEMPERANCE UNION
The September meeting of the Brooklyn branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held recently in the Baptist Church parlour. Mrs. Sawdei\ (life vice-president) occupied the chair and presided over a good attendance. The devotional exercises were taken by Mrs. Raine, Mesdames Brassing and Johnson were cordially welcomed as visitors. It was decided to send a donation to the Maori fund. Arrangements were made for visits to Wellington Hospital during October. Mrs. Sawden gave a talk on the organising and financial aspects of the union. Mrs. .Stinson volunteered to visit sick members. Mrs. Reed spoke in appreciation of the work of Miss C. M. McLay, Dominion “Y” organiser, among the young people. A paper on scientific research was read by Mis. Webster.
During the afternoon opportunity was taken to congratulate Mrs. Pickering, who for many years has been prominently identified with the Women's Christian Temiierance Union and other societies for the benefit of women and children, and she was presented with a long-service badge at the recent annual district convention. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Cracknell, delegate to the Wellington district convention, who gave an account of the proceedings. Afternoon tea was served by the Baptist ladies, bringing a pleasant meeting to a close.
