NEW DRAPERY STORE
Shillings Ltd. Open To-day
With the opening this morning of the premises of Shillings, Limited, in Manners Street, Wellington—and New Zealand—will have its first experience of ft new style of merchandising drapery and men’s mercery. A New Zealand company, with all its capital subscribed within New Zealand, it is the intention of Shillings, Limited, to provide for the clothing needs of each and every family, offering a wide and attractive range of apparel at prices which only large-scale buying can accomplish. The Wellington shop, which is situated in the building recently occupied by the Ritz restaurant, is to be the forerunner of others to be erected in other centres of New Zealand.
Much interest hfjs been aroused in Wellington by the bulwark of planking which has screened the premises from the public gaze for several weeks. Curiosity was relieved to some extent _ yesterdays when the removal of the boarding revealed a smart modern frontage of black and chromium, with tastefully dressed windows and intriguing glimpses of long vists of counters. The interior of the store has been as thoroughly renovated as the exterior, and conforms to the most modern practice in the "design of large stores. Lighting is on a new and very efficient plan, and an innovation which should be appreciated ■ by employees and purchasers alike is the installation of a large gas-operated airconditioning plant. The atmosphere of a large and busy store can become almost unbearalbly oppressive to the assistants and certainly unattractive to the buying community. By means of this plant the air will always be fresh, free from draughts, and controlled to a suitable temperature. Some doubt may be expressed at the placiug of an unconditional guarantee on everv article sold by Shillings, Limited, but the establishment of a laboratory in which erery article to be sold will be subjected to searching tests will enable the guarantee to be reinforced. Irrespective of pp-ice. every line will be tested to ensure that its colour and wearing qualities are up to the standard which it purports to reach.
