ABSENT FROM SHIP
Norwegian Seamen to be Deported
Pleading guilty through an interpreter, two seamen, Askel George Olai Kaldteim and Bjanre Alexander -Hanoey, were convicted by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of being absent without leave from the Norwegian tanker John Knudsen, and of unlawfully landing in New Zealand while being prohibited immigrants. Defendants offered no excuse. Mr A. Paul, collector of Customs, said the tneu had no permits to land in New Zealand. The John Knudsen was in port in Wellington on September 21, and they had left her on that day. As soon as she left New Zealand from Dunedin on September 26 defendants became prohibited immigrants under the section, and the shipping company concerned became liable for their maintenance and the cost of their permit. Air. P. Maysmoor, of the Vacuum Oil Company, agents for the John Knudsen, gave details of the costs already incurred in the matter.
The magistrate made an order for defendants to be deported and to be kept in custody pending suitable arrangements with regard to costs.
