Waikanae Identity Dies
(From “The Dominion,” Sept.* 19, 1911.) The death occurred on Sunday afternoon, at the residence of Mr. A. Burling, of Waikanae’s well-known centenarian, Mr. Henry Burling. He was 104 years old and enjoyed the reputation of being, the oldest man in the Dominion, A Socialist demonstration has been held at Vienna to protest against the dear food prices. Fifty thousand persons marched to the Rathaus, where violent speeches were made demanding the importation of foreign meat and a reduction in the cost of living. The demonstration culminated in rioting, and numerous windows were smashed, including those of the Law Courts. Tramcars were wrecked and the police and soldiers stoned. Barricades were erected, and the furniture from restaurants and schools was piled high jn the streets and set fire to. The Dragoons charged and dispersed the crowd, but toward evening the rioting was renewed in the workmen’s quarter in the Ottakring district. The troops fired, killing three persons, and wounding four severely and eighty slightly. There were 176 arrests.
