The Basic Wage
Sir, —The papers report that there is considerable congestion in the work before the Arbitration Court, because the basic wage hag not yet been fixed. There appears to be some misapprehension about this. In one of our main basicprimary productions the basic wage has really been fixed, that is, dairying. See- ' ing that the Government is buying the whole of the dairying output, at a fixed price, and has also fixed the wages of those employed in it, the business is very much bordering on being Government owned. . Does it not appear reasonable, and;simple of application, that the basis taken to obtain the wages paid in this industry, that has to meet world parity in selling, should be used as the base on which all other Arbitration Court awards are made?—l am. etc., CINDERELLA Wellington, September 16.
