OBITUARY
Mr. Irving Thalberg
Hollywood, September 14. The death has occurred of Mr. Irving Thalberg, from lobular pneumonia, after a week’s illness. One of the best-known American filin', directors, Mr. Irving Thalberg was born at New York in 1899. He was the leading producer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and produced many successful films, including “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” “Ben Hur,” “Broadway Melody. ’ “The Barrette of Wimpole Street, “What Every Woman Knows,” and “Mutiny on the Bounty.” After finishing “Romeo and Juliet,” he was working on a screen version of Pearl Bucks ‘ Ihe Good Earth.” He married Miss Norma Shearer in 1928, and there are two children, Irving and Katherine. Ossip Gabrilowitsch , Detroit, September 14. The death has occurred, after a long illness, of Ossip Gabrilowitsch. the famous pianist aud conductor. Ossip Gabrilowitsch, pianist and orchestral director, had been conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 1918. Born at St. Petersburg in 18 <8 he was educated at the Conservatory of Music there under Tolstoff, Liadov and Glazunov. In 1894 he won the Rubinstein Prize, and later studied the piano with Lcschetizky and composition with Navratil. Vienna. In 1900 he married Mw Clara Clemens, daughter of Mr. S. L. Clemens (Mark Twain). Since 1900 he had made many tours of the United States, playing in recitals and with leading orchestras.
