HUTT VALLEY NEWS

ROAD TO BLOCKHOUSE Widening to 40ft Proposed Following a decision at a regent meeting, the Upper Hutt Borough Council has made application to have Fortune Lane, which leads to the historic blockhouse at Trentham, widened to 40 feet. At present it is only half a chain wide. Arrangements to this end are almost completed, and it is expected that an order-in-council exempting it from the 66ft. regulaion, as required by the Public Works Act. will be issued shortly.

SEASON CONCLUDED

Debaters’ Smoke Concert

“Although the affairs of the society may be said to have ebbed a little toward the close of the year, the individual interest of members has been stimulated to a degree that should make the flow of the tide in the next season exceed all past records,” said Mr. V. Piper when proposing the toast of “The Society” at the final meeting of the Hutt Debating Society last week. , . , , , A record number of meetings had been held and the activities of the society had increased considerably, he said. Outside debates had been held with much success, both in the competitions society's debating championships, -in which the Hutt team reached second place, and in the competition conducted under the auspices of the Wellington Union of Public Speaking Societies. The most gratifying result had been the improvement that had taken place in the general standard of speaking. Replying, the president, Mr. B. A. Weyburne, spoke upon the interest that debating provided for its adherents. Moreover, the wide variety of subjects debated provided a method of acquiring knowledge on general topics that possessed an appeal far greater than the written word, while hearing an argument “for” and “against” presented a very clear impression of what might have been an involved question, and eliminated the element of party bias that seemed to be becoming increasingly predominant. During the evening, which took the form of a smoke concert, various items were contributed by members. STANDARD HIGH Petone Rifle Club’s Year “Another successful year” was reviewed in the report presented to the annual meeting of the Petone Defence Rifle Club at which Mr. SV. SI. Jackson presided. . , ' . ‘’Our complaint regarding inferior ammunition has disappeared, and in consequence the attendance on the range has improved considerably, making it an easy matter for the committee to gauge with greater accuracy the exact number of targets required each Saturday,, it stated “The membership has increased slightly, and with the better ammunition the keenest interest and rivalry has been displayed in all the club competitions. The standard of shooting has been very high—particularly toward the close of the season —and the steady improvement by some of the new and younger members augurs well for the future. ’ The cup presented by the patron, Mr. S. V. Burridge, had been competed for, shooting in all club divisions, November, 1935, to March, 1936, counting. The first winner was T. McNab. Single range shooting was again resorted to and proved successful with the exception that members are inclined to arrive -a little late at times. The system of coaching appeared to work successfully, and when the younger and new shots were left on their own in the championship series they proved that their endeavour to carry on without coaching wherever possible stood them well. The opening day wa s fixed for September 26. It was reported that the Wellington Rifle' Association had adopted the smaller bull’s-eye at the 800 yard and 900 yard distances, and the larger aiming marks at the 300 yard distance; Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr. 8.
