GOLF TOURNAMENT

Hotelkeepers at Play EIGHTY COMPETITORS The fifth annual tournament of the North Island Licensed Victuallers’ Goll Association concluded on the Hutt links yesterday, when the 80 competitors entered into the various competitions in a carefree way, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.’ * The Retailers’ championship was won by E. Manley, a handicap 14 player from the Seafield club, Wanganui, who defeated J. N. Anderson, a Hawera club player, oh the seven mark. . T E. James, Wellington, earned oil the Wholesalers’ championship, defeating J. Black, 'Wellington, by 6 and 4 in the final. , There were no fewer than 37 events on the programme, even the limit men having a special competition of their own. The competent hon. secretary, Mr. G. B. Menzies, of Napier, again had all the arrangements running smoothly. The weather was fine, but a blustering north-westerly wind made low scoring difficult. Final: McKelvie beat Huxford, 4 and 3. A Close Game. The most exciting match of the day was the final for the retailers’ championship, in which E. Manley defeated J. N. Anderson by 2 and .1. They were all square at the turn, Manley ringing on a birdie 3at the ninth (377 yards) to square the game. Manley took 46 for the out journey to Anderson’s 47. They halved the next two holes, and Manley drew 1 up with a bogey 4 at the twelfth. The next two holes were halved in s’s, but Anderson squared the match once again by taking the fifteenth (505 yards) in bogey 5 to 7. Tragedy lay in wait for Anderson at the short sixteenth. He duffed his iron tee shot, while Manley was on the edge of the green. Anderson found the edge of the green with his second, but Manley was short with his chip. Anderson laid his approach putt four feet from the pin, but Manley then laid him a dead stymie, and, in attempting to negotiate this, Anderson knocked Manley’s ball into the cup for a 3. A magnificent mashie pitch laid Manley’s third three feet from the pin at the seventeenth, and he took the hole in 4 to 5, which gave him the championship by 2 and 1. Manley did the home run in 42, which gave him 88 for the round. Anderson took 47 each way. Special Prizes. The tournament concluded with a dinner at the Grand Hotel last night, when the prizes were presented by the president of the association, Mr. N. Tailby, Auckland. Judgeford v. Manor Park An inter-club match between Judget'ord and Manor Park Golf Clubs, played at Judgeford on Sunday, resulted in a draw, seven games all, with three games squared.
