AUCKLAND TRAINING

Some Interesting Work Done \ AVONDALE CANDIDATES Dominion Special Service. Auckland, September 15. In spite of the fact that the tracks in the various training centres were heavy, some interesting work was performed this morning by horses with engagements at the Avondale Jockey Club’s spfing meeting, to be held on Saturday and Monday. The course proper with the poles out 70 feet was available at Ellerslie, and the best efforts were recorded by the Avondale Cup candidates. On the course proper Mazir (Wiggins) and Horowhenua (Kearns) finished well clear of Te Hai (Manson) at the conclusion of a mile in 1.52, the first hah in 54, and the last half in 56. Mazir made most of the running, but Horowhenua ran up to him in the straight and appeared to be gtfiug the stronger at the finish. Te Hai was not bustled, and could have done better. Horowhenua has been working consistently well. Mazir’s effort was very satisfactory, but his Avondale Cup chance would be improved if he had a little longer to prepare. Knight of Australia (Wiggins) finished very resolutely at the end of a round in 2.17 2-5, and was lengths ahead of Tybalt (Tremain), who took 2.18 1-5. Knight of Australia ran the last seven furlongs in 1.41 1-5, and the last four in 59 1-5. He is in great heart, and should make a forward showing on Saturday. Tybalt was allowed to loaf at the finish. He is a very lazy worker if not urged. His condition has improved a good deal since he ran at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Lord Vai (Goldfinch) and Master Brierly (Wiggins) were responsible for a sound effort over seven furlongs in 1.39 2-5, the first four in 56, and the last three in 43 2-5. Lord Vai is very fit, and was running on very strongly. Master Brierly also went satisfactorily, and is steadily improving in condition, although he may require a little more time to become thoroughly attpned. Mainland covered four furlongs in 56 1-5. She appears to have gone on the right way since running fourth in the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, and should have a good opportunity to open her winning account in the novice events at Avondale. Versant (Holland) worked solidly, but was not timed. He is bright and muscular, and will disappoint if he fails to race better at Avondale than he did at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, where he was never dangerous in the open sprint. On the two-year-old track Bowyang (Goldfinch) sprinted three furlongs nicely in 35 3-5. He is well forward, and is a nice mover with a good turn of speed. Harlech (Murray) ran two furlongs in 26 3-5. Although not. as forward as Bowyang, Harlech is snowing steady improvement. Te Rapa Gallops. The course proper, sixty feet out, was used at Te Rapa. Silver Briar was not extended to complete a circuit in 2.17 3-5. Le Chasseur and Sergia were associated over six furlongs, and finished on terms in 1.25, a good effort considering' the conditions. They ran their first halfmile in 56. Lucidus, who returned; from Wanganui in great heart, worked freely on the inner grass. . , , . Prince Acre was also restricted to strong pace work. He is looking well. Sinking Fund was just in front of Sir Tommy at the end of five furlongs in 1.10. The latter went pleasingly for a hack. The two-year-old Penzance, by Raceful from Lady Lois, dashed over two furlongs along the back in 24. Tradesman, accompanied by Red Fox over the first seven furlongs, was clocked to compass a circuit in 2.16. Considering the fact that he was held back to his companion in the initial stages, the effort was sound. L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride him at Avondale, and N. R. McKenzie will ride Red Fox. At Te Awainutu. The flags were out 35 feet on the course proper at Te Awamutu, and the going was heavy. Gallio worked well over five furlongs in 1.7}. He looks much improved since his ■trip to Wanganui. Galilee was allotted half a mile, which took 56}. Jonathan went seven furlongs comfortably in 1.41. ■Sweet Rose, who went from a standing start, completed six furlongs in 1.22, the last five taking 1.8. . Girl Pat ran two furlongs against the rails, taking 24 3-5. Te Aroha. The gallops at Te Aroha were on the course proper, on which the flags were 70 feet out. . Gay Rose moved attractively over two circuits. Lagoon (Preston), who was practically at her best, defeated King Musk (Keesing) by two lengths over seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5. Mungacre beat Bonny Song over five furlongs in 1.7 2-5.
