FOR AUSTRALIA

B. H. Morris Departs NOTES AND COMMENTS Rosehill Guineas on Saturday

(By

The Watcher.)

B. H. Morris sailed for Australia yesterday on the Maunganui, accompanied by Mrs. Morris. Mr. J. F. Kiley, the owner of One Whetu, was also a passenger. They will arrive in time for the Rosehill races on Saturday. th Sydney on Saturday. Another important fixture is set down in Sydney for Saturday next, the Rosehill meeting, at which will be decided the Rosehili Guineas of nine furlongs, another Derby trial. In addition there are the Hill Stakes, of one mile, at weight-for-age with penalties and allowances, the Camellia Stakes, seven furlongs, and the Spring Handicap, of one mile and three furlongs. Rosehili Guineas running has not proved a good guide to the A.J.C. Derby. First run in 1910, Biplane (1917) and Phar Lap (1929) are the only Guineas winners who went on and won the Derby. Last year's winner, Hadrian, did not run in the Derby, but the second horse, Allunga, went on ana dead-heated with Homer at Raudwjck Homer was unplaced at Rosehill. Success in the Rosehill Guineas has caused some horses to start hot favourites for the Derby, but in nearly all cases there has been a substantial reversal of form. Nigger Minstrel was a Guineas winner who put up a great race in the Derby, being beaten a head only by Heroic. Spedrfelt was only another head away. They were three great colts, and Probably there has never been a better finish in the whole history of the race.

Rosehili Entries. Gold Rod, Talking, Gustos and other leading three-year-olds are in the Guineas, but Talking may not meet Gold Rod, as the former is also in the Hill Stakes, in which Mala also appears. Cuddle, Sporting Blood, Kinnoull, Gay Blonde, Silver Ring and Stretto are also in the weight-for-age event. Cynical Kid is in the Hurdle race, of one mile and a half, while in the Camellia Stakes are Stretto, Or Parade, Cuddle, Ilium, Gay Blonde and Capris. Custos has been entered for the Spring Handicap, also One Whetu, Queen of Song, Egrnont, Loud Applause, and Sporting Blood. International, Rebel Lad, Padishah, Riposte, Omarere, and several other New Zealand-bred horses are in the Highweight Handicap, in which there are so many entries that it looks sure to be run in divisions.

“Mug Trained.” There was an amusing incident at Wanganui on Saturday. As the horses were parading for one of the races an onlooker remarked to a friend that he was going to back so-and-so. “Good heavens, man,” said the friend, “don’t do that. He's trained by the owner, one of the biggest mugs in the country.” The owner happened to be standing just behind the pair and he overheard this uncomplimentary, reference to himself, but with a laugh he said, “Yes, that’s right, I happen to know him well.” The horse in question ran second.

Showed Pace. Ticket, the two-year-old half-sister by Paper Money to Shy, was very much on her toes prior to the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, and she started from wide out, but she showed a lot of early pace. Ticket is trained for R. W. Lewis by T. George.

The St. Leger. Gables to Australian papers in connection with the English St. Leger show that Rhodes Scholar was a starter. The winner, Boswell, was at fairly substantial odds. He was ridden by P. Beasley. Few are Choseu.

First forfeits for the A.J.C. Derby left a field of 50 out of the original 422 entries. Second forfeit is due on the Thursday preceding the race, after which all those remaining in have to pay £25 acceptance.

Jockeys for Avondale. Riding engagements announced for the the first day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting include:— N. Vaughan: Carshalton, J. F. Fergus: Sebrof, Benighted. W. Bartie: Mai de Met, Tip Toes, Tray Bit. P. Fearn: Scotland, Royal Passage. O. Evans: Doric Star. J. Melnally: Survanna. F. E. Baker: Merry Lap' P. Mcllroy: Emancipation. R. Stratton: Elanage, Thurwind, Lord Willonyx. R. Horne: Love Parade. W. J. Broughton: Lady Valina. On to Avondale. F. Davis went on to Avondale with his team after the Wanganui meeting, and T. George also sent up Debham and Sigurd. Rider in Avondale Cup. S. 'Wilson has been engaged to ride Silver Brier in the Avondale Cup. Riders at Foxton. P. Burgess will do the riding for R. Johnson’s stable at Foxton on Saturday, and he will also be on Liane. Sunee and The Pawnbroker, will be ridden by L. Faulkiner. New Zealanders Prominent. First acceptances for the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap have left no fewer than six New Zealanders among the eight topweights. Cuddle is No. 1 with 9.12 and Sporting Blood No. 2 with 9.1. Silver Ring is now No. 1 in the Metropolitan with 9.9. The Buzzer. The Buzzer’s absence from the Trial Handicap on the second day at Wanganui is stated to have been due to the fact that he was a trifle sore after his winning effort on Thursday. The Buzzer has brilliant speed and has only to train on the right way to prove a good winner. For Ellerslie. 'The Wanganui trainer W. Rayner intends to take a team to Ellerslie for the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting next month. One of bis charges will be the two-year-old Icing, who displayed plenty of courage in her winning effort last Saturday. Icing is to contest the Welcome Stakes. Limond Lad. Limond Lad, the winner of the Port Adelaide Guineas on Saturday, was bred at the Koatanui Stud. Wanganui, by Mr. G. M. Currie, and was purchased on behalf of Mr. E. E. Jolly, at the Trantham yearling sales in 1935 for the top price of 2100 guineas. Limond Lad is a fullbrother to the well-performed Veilmond, who is now at the stud in Australia. Death of Mr. W. Crossan. Mr. William Crossan, whose death occurred at Dunedin on Friday, won a Dunedin Cup with Parable, and just missed another when Warstep was awarded a half-head victory oyer Ogier. The most valuable stake credited to him was the Invercargill Cup won by Glenrowan, trained by E. J. Ellis. A smart sprinter in St. Denis represented Mr. Crossan in the early part of his racing career. The last horse to earry Mr. Crossan’s wellknown chocolate and gold jacket was Latitude, in H. Nurse’s stable. Ashburton Riders. The following riding engagements have been made for the Ashburton meeting on Saturday:—A. G. Parsons. Cape Gabo, Heather Land, Tout le Mond, Invoice, and Bellerive; A. Messervy, Calotte and Pelmet; C. T. Wilson, Screamer, Aggravate, Sir Hugh, and Gaysome; J. L. Cotton, Tunneller; G. Ridgway, Brevity; H. Turner, Wexford Bridge.

“Unconscious.” There is au element of humour iu the hurdle race at Randwick on Saturday won by an unconscious jockey. It shows that horses can sometimes do as well without the help, or handicap, of the man on top.

Bred by Owners. The placed horses in the Wanganui Debutante Stakes, Icing, Sigurd, and Screen Star, were all bred by their owners. Icing was not offered among the Koatanui yearlings at the sales. She is a half-sister to Aspian and a sister to Tout le Monde. Screen Star is a halfbrother to Movie Star and Hunting Scene. A Winning Family. Rob Roy, who is beginning to show up in Sydney racing, is a half-brother by Night Raid to Homer, who dead-heated in the last A.J.C. Derby. The dam, Quadrilateral, has been represented in Australia also by a good winner in Quarto, by Paper Money. Rob Roy might easily develop into a Derby winner. Foxton Acceptances. Acceptances for the Foxton Racing Club’s spring meeting, to be held next Saturday, will close to-night at 8 o’clock. Otaki Nominations. Nominations for the spring meeting ol the Otaki Maori Racing Club, to be bold on October 3, will elose on Monday at 8 p.m. Answers to Correspondents. “Curiosity.” Wanganui: £lO/18/-; £2 3/6. “Perplexed,” Newman: £l2/4/-, including the original 10/-.
