Recent Economic Changes
Sir, —In a recent issue of your paper there appeared two peculiar productions over the names of “Alan Free and L. J. McDonald.” You have intimated that,, beyond reserving right of reply, the correspondence is to end. I thank you for the privilege, ’but, seriously, I hardly think it worth while to avail myself of it. To the first-named contributor you should be grateful, seeing he “rushed to your aid.” You needed it when.he furnished you so cleverly with a string of alphabetical letters, a sort of cross-word puzzle, out of which words were to be formed. Then he asserts that you have committed a “blunder” in printing a letter that accuses you of complicity in crimp because the words “aiding and abetting” were used. If he will turn to the dictionary he will find that the phrase quoted is not confined to; criminal matters. It is frequently applied to “encourage,” to “countenance, to “uphold” in a good sense. Jeremy Taylor has it: “Our duty is urged and our confidence abetted.” So much for the erudite Alan Free. Now, as to your other correspondent who signs himself “L. J. McDonald.” Whoever he may be, and what cause he thought he would serve by joining in on this discussion. I do not know. The extravagant language he uses does suggest that he is very much an interested party, but the thoughts he expressed do not jus-, tify the use of your space or my time in reply.—l am, etc., SUCH AND SUCH. Wellington, September 15. [This correspondence is closed.]
