Causes of Motor Accidents
Sir, —Your correspondent “Old Timer” hits the nail on the head, I think, when he mentions the high bonnet and low seats of most modern cars as a cause of motor accidents. English motor journals have been stressing this point for some time now. and perhaps this accounts for a few English cars having better forward vision due to a lower bonnet and higher seating. The number Ot scraped and dented mudguards shows up the poor visibility obtained in gome of the new cars. The driver's vision can usually be easily increased to a certain extent by raising the whole front seat a little, or by blocking up the seat proper from its base; even a suitable cushion placed on the seat would raise the driver so that he does not have to just peer over the dashboard and along a high bonnet. Another source of danger is the blind area caused by the fixed small glass panels fitted to some of the modern cars. When wet they block the driver’s vision considerably and it is practically Impossib.e to see through them on a wet night.— 1 am> etC " CLEAR VISION. Wellington, September 14.
