Tributes to Memory

Tributes were paid in the House of Representatives yesterday to the memory of two former legislators who died recently—Messrs. Richard Moore and Francis Henry Smith. Both represented South Island constituencies, Mr. Moore holding the Kaiapoi seat for two terms and later becoming a member of tbe Legislative Council, and Mr. Smith representing the Waitaki electorate. When moving a resolution of sympathy, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, described Mr. Moore as a lovable character and a member who had been admired on all sides of the House.

Sir Apiruna Ngata (Opposition, Eastern Maori) also paid a warm tribute to Mr. Moore, who, he said, had always remained one of the old school of Conservatives in the country. .Mr. E. • J. Howard (Government, Christchurch North) said that Mr. Moore had always been a good opponent and had served the country well, not only in Parliament but on many local bodies in Canterbury. Mr. E. T. Tirikatene (Government, Southern Maori) spoke of the fine work done by Mr. Moore for Canterbury Maoris.

"The records of Parliament show that Mr. Smith was a fairly live wire," said the Prime Minister, when moving a resolution of sympathy with the family of Mr. F. H. Smith, who held the Waitaki seat from 1911 to 1914.

Mr. T. D. Burnett (Opposition, Temuka) said tliat Mr. Smith had been a staunch follower of the late Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey. Mr. Burnett spoke highly of Mr. Smith’s ability as a legislator. The House adjourned at 3 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. as a mark of respect to their memory. •
