WORK OF SESSION

Two New Bills Expected To-day TAXATION LEGISLATION Two new Bills are likely to make their appearance in the House of Representatives this week, according to an announcement made last evening by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. They will be the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill, which is expected to be introduced to-day, and the Local Body Reform Bill, providing for the amalgamation of local bodies, which may not come before the House until later. Mr. Savage that to-day would be devoted to the completion of the necond reading debate on the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Bill. He understood that several members of the Opposition still wanted to speak on the Bill, and it was probable that some Government members would also take part in the debate. “The annual taxing Bill has already been introduced” Mr. Savage said, “and if we can bring down the Land and In come Tax Amendment Bill in time, It may be possible to consider both measures together to-morrow. I do not think any objection can be taken to this course. The legislation will have to be passed before the assessment forms can be distributed.” , The Prime Minister added that sev eral Bills would have to be brought down within the next few weeks, although most of them would be of a “washing-up” or machinery nature. One measure would provide for minor amendments to the Workers Compensation Act, although the major Bill dealing with that particular problem would be postponed until next year. The prospects were that the present session would conclude about the middle of next month.
