TESTIMONIALS FROM EMPLOYERS
A reference in the news to-day to the importance of having reliable testimonials in support of applications for employment under the Labour Department’s placement scheme raises the question of the general reliability of such' documents. It is hardly to be supposed that an applicant with unsatisfactory testimonials would present them. In any case people as a rule prefer to give no testimonials at all rather than give unsatisfactory ones. But sometimes instances occur where a man’s good nature overrides his judgment and sense of responsibility and he gives a "reference” of no merit beyond its face value. The knowledge that this is done tends to depreciate the reliability of all testimonials.
