ANZAC FESTIVAL

New Zealanders May Join In Competition ANNUAL SYDNEY EVENT Literary and art competitions open to New Zealanders as well as Australians have' been arranged by the Anzac Festival Committee of Sydney. The competitions, entries for which elose on November 30, are held each year as a preliminary to the Anzac Festival at the Sydney Conservatorlum on the eve of Anzac Day. “The Anzac Festival is the outcome of the desire to link up the younger generation with the story of the past, and to cherish in unbroken continuity the glorious traditions of our race,” states a brochure issued by the committee.

“It stirs the imagination to remember that during the last week of April we celebrate events which epitomise a whole cycle of British history. On April 23 (dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of England) we commemorate the birth of Shakespeare; on Aprils, the leading of the Anzacs at Gallipoli; and on April 29, the arrival of Captain Cook in Botany Bay. St. George, Shakespeare, the Anzacs, Caje tain Cook, symbolise for us of British stock the Ideals of valour, endeavour, truth and beauty, which we hope may find expression in the literature, art and music of our country.”

The competitions embrace the following sections: — Patriotic poem, suitable for setting to music. Entry fee, 1/-; prize, an order for books to the value of £l/1/-. One-act play to last about 20 minutes. Entry fee, 2/-; prize, pn order for books to the value of £2/2/-.

Short story, about 3000 words. Entry fee, 1/-; prize, books to the value of £l/1/-.

Design for bookplate in any medium, symbolising the British ideals of valour, endeavour, truth and beauty, having an essentially Australian atmosphere or subject. Eutry fee, 2/-; prize, £5. Design for a showcard for the Anzac Eve Festival performance (choral singing, verse speaking and other events). Entry fee, 1/-; books to the value of £l/1/-. Design for a programme cover, two or three colours, for the Anzac Eve Festival (9in. by siin.). Entry fee, 2/-; prize, books to the value of £2/2/-. Entries and fees are to be sent to the secretary, Anzac Festival Committee, Scot Chambers, Hosking Place (off 86 Pitt Street), Sydney. Competitors may submit as many entries as they like provided each entry is accompanied by the fee. The competitions are open to all, without age limit. The adjudicators’ decision shall be final, and all prize-winning works to become the property of the committee. Manuscripts must be signet! by a nom-de-plume and accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the author’s name and address inside and the nom-de-plume on the outside. In the art sections each entry must bear the competitor’s name and address on back, of the design.
