Wellington Beats Manawatu Playing oh the Palmetatou North Technical School grounds on Saturday, the Wellington basketball representatives defeated Manawatu by 17 goals to 12 a fter a very fast and clever exhibition of the code. The teams were fairly evenly matched and the game was one of the best seen here this season. The teams were as follows:— Wellington: Misses D. Rossiter, L. Thompson and M. McMillan (forwards); E McGhee, J. O’Connor and J. Barrie (centres); Z. Eames, M. Fitzgerald and B. Blackie (defence). Manawatu:. Misses P. Payne, J. Clevely and B. Hansen (forwards); D. Young, M. Reid and B. Mason (centres), A. Shaw, V. Hancork and R. Leask (defence) From the start Wellington attacked and immediately scored, but the home team was not long in drawing level. Wellington again scored, and so did Manar watu but several further attempts by the home' team came to nothing. Wellington received the ball and. shot two goals in quick succession, to which Manawatu replied with a beautiful long shot by P. Payne. At half-time the visitors were leading by seven goals to five. The second half was again very fast, Wellington piling on 10 goals, including a “hat trick of three iff quick succession. Manawatu scored seven goals in this half. Superior goal-throwing won the day for the visitors. For the victors goals were scored by Miss L. Thompson (6), Miss D. Rossiter (7) and Miss M. McMillan (4), and for the visitors by Miss B. Hansen (8) and Miss P. Payne (4). Game at Rongotea. In a match against the Te Kawau representatives at Rongotea the Wellington team won by 20 goals to 14 after the half-time score had been 14-4 in the visitors’ favour.
