“LAWN TENNIS”

The Strokes and Rules Tennis players, coaches ,and followers of the game will cordially welcome “Lawn Tennis, the Strokes and Rules,” an invaluable little handbook of some 90 pages, from the pen of that well-known lawn tennis scribe, Mr. E. C. Wearne, which has just been published by National Magazines, Ltd. Mr. Wearne is well known throughout New Zealand as “Forehand,” tennis writer for “The Dominion" during the past ten years, and as “Server” for “N.Z. Sporting Life” within th.e past two years. In his capacity as special tennis writer for “The Dominion” Mr. Wearne has attended every important tournament which has been played in New Zealand during the past ten years. He has seen the great William Tilden and W. M. .Johnston, the Americans; and all the leading English, French and Australian players, both men and women, in action, and is a close observer. His authoritative articles on the game have done much to put tennis on a better footing in this country, and in his book he supplies a long-felt want by explaining the origin and interpretation of the present rules of the game. Each rule is divided into its component clauses, and explanatory notes, decisions and illustrations are given. But Mr. Wearne does not stop at the rules, he goes on to give invaluable advice regarding the grip, footwork, how to make the various shots, faults to avoid, and tips as to tactics. “Lawn Tennis” is a valuable handbook on the game which will be welcomed by all connected with it, from reigning champions to the boy and girl setting out to take their first lesson.
