Win For Manawatu Rugby Representatives f HAWKE’S BAY BEATEN Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 12. The Manawatu senior Rugby representatives defeated the Hawke's Bay representatives by one point after a fast, open game on the Palmerston North showgrounds oval this afternoon, the final score being 12-11 in favour of the home team. Manawatu had the good fortune to land a penalty kick, while the visitors missed with an equally easy attempt. The ground, was in very good order, and the weather was fair. For Hawke's Bay, the most useful forwards were Miller, O’Brien, Exeter and Flannagan, and in the back line Clothier, Robins and Bradley were outstanding. On the Manawatu side, L. Findlay and J. Finlay were the rpost prominent forwards, and in the backs, Brinsden, Nicol and D. Buick stood out conspicuously. Thurston failed to handle cleanly, and Fletcher got few opportunities. Both these players, however, were good defenders, and were severely tested. Campbell, who replaced Dernier in the fullback position in the second spell, played a brilliant defensive game, getting his team out of many difficulties. Hawke’s Bay kicked off into the wind. ’ Brinsden, Thurston and Buick immediately taking play to the Bay twenty-five. Gathering in the ball in his own twenty-five, Waugh made n great run up the field to the Bay twenty-five, where, from a ruck, Thurston made n poor attempt nt a field goal. The rebound sent the ball to Fletcher, who sent n long pass to Waugh. The speedy Manawatu winger beat Johnston and scored a try in the corner. The kick missed. Manawatu 12, Hawke’s Bay 8. Johnston got away soon afterward and. racing at top speed, reached the Manawatu line before J. Finlay grounded him. From a scrum on the line Clothier cut across to score a neat try. The kick missed. Manawatu 12, Hawke's Bay 11. Led by Flannagan, the Bay forwards made a determined thrust into Manawatu territory, and only the cool play of Campbell saved the home team. Buick then broke away, and a fast rush by the Manawatu forwards, led by Sullivan and Crawford, placed the visitors in trouble. Hutchinson forced-down, and the game ended in a few moments with Mannwatu right on the Bay line.
