FORECAST FOR TO-DAY’S WEATHER.

Fine at first; conditions later becoming unsettled. Following is the weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. to-day: — A rather intense anti-cyclone covers the New Zealand area, but a deep depression is now advancing from south-eastern Australia on to the Tasman Sea. Light to moderate and variable winds; southerlies prevailing at first over the northern half of the North Island, but. northerlies soon setting in generally and freshening to-morrow about and south of Cook Strait; later rising to gale force at places. Seas slight to moderate in New Zealand waters, but rising about Foveaux Strait and to-morrow about Cook Strait and on the west coast of the South Island. Moderate to fresh north-east to northerly winds in the eastern Tasman Sea, backing to north-westerlies and increasing to gale force in the central and southern portions. Seas rising generally. Weather fine in most districts and becoming m’lder; rain developing soon, however, in the far south and extending to-day to Westland; later conditions becoming more generally unsettled in districts with a westerly aspect, with heavy rain on the west coast of the South Island. YESTERDAY’S WEATHER. Wellington.— Beautifully fine and sunny, with a gentle north-westerly breeze. The minimum temperature during Sunday night was 37deg., and the temperature on the grass 27.8 deg. Yesterday’s maximum temperature was 52.5 deg., and that at 3 p.m. 50deg. Rainfall at “The Dominion” building for 24 hours ended midnight, ml. Total for month. ,49in.; for year, 34.17 in. Palmerston North.— Cloudy, with occasional glimpses of sunshine ; cold temperatures and a moderate westerly wind. Masterton. — Bright sunshine from cloudless sky.; no wind. Wanganui.— Fine and sunny; passing clouds; light southerly breeze. Waipukurau.— The weather cleared on Sunday but remained bitterly cold. A heavy frost yesterday morning was followed by a bright, sunny day. The glass rose appreciably. . , Auckland.—A continuation of fine weather and a light southerly wind, but the conditions were exceptionally cold during the early morning. The barometer was high and steady at 30.45 in. all day. Christchurch. —After a record frost for this year of 14deg.. the Weather was sunny and clear, with a very light north-west breeze in the morning changing to north-east in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 51.9 deg. The barometer was rising slowly and registered 30,35 in. . Dunedin.— Pleasantly mild with more than eight hours, of brilliant sunshine. There was a slight south-west breeze in the morning, but the afternoon was calm. The maximum temperature was 36deg.
