High Winds and Low Temperatures WETTEST SINCE 1912 Although the weather in the first half of July was as mild and pleasant as that of May and June, from the 16th onward hopes of a continued mild winter gradually vanished, observes Dr. E. Kidson, Director of Meteorological Services, in reviewing the weather for the past month. -From the Sth to the 15th beautifully fine and mild weather prevailed, but from the 17th till the end. of the month there was rain every day in the city area. Persistent southerlies blew fronl July 20, and temperatures were low. The culmination came on Friday night, with hail, sleet, and snow. The total bright sunshine for the month was 104.8 hours, the previous average being 107.5 hours. Nevertheless, it was the wettest July since 1912, rain having fallen on 21 days to make a total of 8.42 in., against the July average of 4.85 in. on 18 days. The heaviest fall in one day was 1.82 in. on July 20. The highest pressure reading was 30.470 in. on July 10, and the lowest 29.002 in. on July 6. The mean maximum temperature was 50.2 deg., and the mean minimum 41.1 deg., the approximate mean being, therefore 45.6 deg. or l.Sdeg. below normal. The highest was 58.1 deg. on July 19, and the lowest 34.3dcg. on July 10 and 15. ' The mean run of the wind in 24 hours was 200 miles, the previous average being 184 miles. . On July 6 the run of the wind reached 478 miles. Fortunately there were no days sufficiently severe for wind and cold combined to cause damage to vegetation.
