SOME ROWING TIPS

Methods for Pace

IN the campaign which has been started by “The Sporting Globe” to improve rowing in Victoria, Bob Hunter, for many years coach of Wide Bay and Queensland crews makes the following eon tribution: — “My methods for pace may be all my own, and my main ideas arc: — “I.—Comfortable length, no overreaching. “2.—Exceptional lively catch, and drive forward of blade. “3. —Finish right home and no unnecessary fast getting of hands away. “4.—Concentrate on slide work, same pace forward as going back. Pace through the water brings up the rating. No slide rushing. ‘•s.—Boat must be caught with the next stroke 'before she commences to lose pace. “6. —Most powerful men in centre of boa t.

“7. —Stroke must be a consistent time setter, and no “dozens,” only faster drive through the water. “8. —Coach to sit in boat until two weeks before race, and must be a good judge of pace (my weight 13st.). “9. —When coach gets out of the boat, no slackening of catch through having a light cox. RUGBY QUERY COMPETITION writes: “Would you please give us your opinion as to which man wins a competition to pick the score in the Wellington v. Hawke’s Bay match on Saturday last. The guesses were: A: Wellington 23, Hawke’s Bay 11. B: Wellington 23. Hawke’s Bay 17. 0: Wellington 18. Hawke's Bay 3.” [We would say that C takes the money as he was only 10 points out in his prognostication. A was 13 points out. and B 19 points wide of the mark.—Sports Editor.]
