Finance Bill
Sir, —I should like to call the attention of the Minister of Finance to the case of a very small class of public servants who at present are outside the scope of the above Bill and therefore cannot benefit by the abolition of the “cuts.” I refer to those public officers who, after suffering one or both "cuts," have since retired, mainly for age. Some have superannuation, others a pension. In both cases the amounts are fixed and very small, and the general increase in the cost of living is hitting them very hard, at an age when they are least fitted to bear hardships. My suggestion to the Minister is that before the Bill receives the Royal assent he should add to it a clause returning to these men the actual amounts deducted from their former salaries up to the time of their retirement. —I am, etc., REASONABLE Wellington, July 31.
