Auckland Civic Welcome By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, July 27. A civic welcome was accorded the members of the English Rugby League team in the Town Hall this afternoon in the presence of a large attendance. The Deputy-Mayor,, the Hon. B. Martin, said that it was the seventh English team to visit Auckland, and only on one occasion, in 1924, had New Zealand won the Test series. Those who had seen the visitors in the opening match on Saturday were impressed by both their quality and quantity. (Laughter.) He hoped the tour would be interesting and that the visitors would carry away pleasant memories. Mr. C. A Snedden, president of the New Zealand Rugby League, and Mr. Grey Campbell, president of the Auckland Rugby League, also extended a welcome. J. Brough, captain of the team, returned thanks for the warmth and sincerity of the welcome. The team, he said, had come not. only to play football but to represent the Old Country. If New Zealanders could win the Courtney Trophy the visitors would be the first to congratulate them. At the captain’s call, the visitors sang their team song.

Curtain-raiser For To-morrow, The curtain-raiser to the Rugby League match, England v. Wellington, at the Basin Reserve at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow, will be provided by the Hutt Xalley and Town juniors.
