Hope Gibbons Shield Won By Poneke Weather conditions for the final event of the series of three road cycling races for the Hope Gibbons Shield, held at Petone on Saturday, . were perfect, there being a representative attendance of officials and supporters of the three local clubs. Five teams, representing Petone. lort Nicholson and Poneke clubs, competed, each team comprising, five riders, the team returning the best average time tor the three races over 25 miles being the winner of the shield for the 1936 season. Remarkably good times were returned by the first three teams to finish. Although it was quite clear that the race of the day was really between Petone A team. Poneke A and Port Nicholson A, all five teams rode almost as one man with remarkable precision, Petone finishing with 22 seconds advance on Port Nicholson, with Poneke 9 seconds slower. Undeterred by the lead of about two minutes held by Poneke A, Petone A made a magnificent effort to even up or break down their rivals’ lead, and succeeded in returning one of the beet times yet registered in one of the contests. However, Poneke’e average time for the three contests still remained the best time, and consequently they carried the honours. .. , Results of Saturday's race are as follow: — . „ _. Petone A (T.
