AUSTRALIA TOO GOOD

Wanganui Defeated at Soccer Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, July 26. The Australian soccer tourists had a convincing win from Wanganui on Saturday by nine goals to one. The match was very one-sided, and it showed the remarkable combination and understanding which existed between the visiting players. There was a large crowd, and the weather was fine. Throughout the match Australia made no mistakes. Their passing and timing was perfect, and gave Wanganui little chance to intercept. It was obvious from the commencement that Australia was keen on early scoring, and the visitors dominated the first spell. Bryant, Australia’s right half, was brilliant, his positional play being pretty to watch. Smith, centre forward, was outstanding with his head work, and scored some spectacular goals. Outstanding in the Wanganui team was L. Wade (right back), Dashfield (right half), Mackie (right wing), and the goalie, Healey, who made'some beautiful saves.

In the first five minutes Wilkinson crossed a hard ball from the wing which Smith headed into the net, Australia coming into play immediately. Healey was kept very busy defending his goal for a period, but Mackie relieved the pressure. The Wilkinson-Smith combination worked again, the latter netting a header. Lack of accuracy in shooting was responsible for Australia having so. much of the ball, but Wanganui later in the game improced. Smith, after a melee in the Wanganui area, then scored his third goal, and following this Wanganui forced a corner. Mackay, the Australian skipper, cleared and sent to Smith, to White, who beat Healey with a perfect shot. A. few minutes later Wanganui was penalised, and McNab, the opposing goalie, sent a beauty home -past Healey. Shortly after resumption, Smith headed in another goal. A great effort by Wanganui had the crowd on its feet when Mackie beat two men, swerved like a champion and shot from an acute angle, his deceptive approach confusing the Australians’ goalie who was left standing. The score put heart into the home side, and for a time they held the visitors in check. Bryant, however, put his team on attack, sent a long one to White who passed to Donaldson.. He crossed high to Smith, who again sent a header into the net. Healey then was hard put to keep the invaders at bay, and he made some exceptionally good saves. Bryant neatly intercepted 'the ball from the Wanganui forwards, and played Cameron into position, who scored. The Australians eased in their play somewhat, and were penalised three times, but Wanganui could make no impression. . Australia’s last score wes netted by Smith who shot in a penalty.
