AT AWAPUNI

Substantial Totalisator Increase MISS PANGO’S HUNT CUP Silver Brier and Passion Flower Win (By Tub Watcher.) Outstanding success attended the winter meeting of tlic Manawatu Racing Club held at Awapuni on Saturday. A beautiful day, more like spring than winter, enticed a large crowd to the course, and an extra race on the card compared with last year saw an increase in totalisator figures to nearly double those of last winter. Racing was keen and interesting, with one or two very close finishes. The track was in good order, though on the heavy side and slow. Miss Pango won the Hunt Cup, m which the field gave a spectacular display of jumping, and Silk Sox won the huidle race. The principal flat races were won by Silver Brier and Passion Flower. The stable of M. C. Moran, Hamilton, won a double with May Song and Silver Brier, and S. Wilson rode two winners. Passion Flower and Warehi. In the running of the Hunt Cup, Gasrange, an aged gelding half-brother by Gasbag to Aurora Borealis, struck a fence and received leg injuries which necessitated his destruction. The totalisator handled £13.160/10/ for eight races, compared with £7163 10/- for seven events la.-’t year, an increase of £5997. Easy for Favourite. The Ladies’ Bracelet was a goal thing for the favourite, Santoft. He waited on the leaders, Bacchus Marsh and Cordon, to the home turn, and led into the straight. Oriel challenged, but had no chance of reaching the winner. 9he others were well back. The winner scored in the same event last year for the same rider. Outside ot Oriel the opposition was very poor. • A Close Finish. Silk Sox, favourite for the hurdles, duly won, but be had a very hard race, and was able only just to beat Hunting Jay. Hunting Jay was held at the post by an aesfstant on a hack, and although he switched round each time ho was pulled up, the start saw him get the jump away. From that stage on he was always handy and after bad jumping had knocked Limtihis back. Hunting Jay had sole charge. Silk Sox moved up on the home turn and was with Hunting Jay entering the straight. Silk Sox put in a faulty jump and faltered, but he came on again on the flat and despite a bumping fin,v;h got up to win by a short head. Valpai was a poor third followed by Royal King and Sir Ronald. Saltspray was left at the post, showing an extremely stubborn mood. Silk Sox was responsible for a good eFort, for Hunting Jay is no mean opponent when he gets away, and he gave him 61b. In addition he showed a courag; eaus finish after a bad last jump. ' alpn.i was moving up well when he gof into the second Inst fence and dropped back. Limulus ran a fair race until jumping mistakes sent her back.

A Runaway Win. The maiden race was a one-horse affair. The favourite, Maysong, went into the lead from the start, and although Malibu, Aube and Ruenzori were bandy to the turn, Maysong ran right away from then in the straight and won by a big margin, Aube was a comfortable second from Ruenzori, with Ruaville, Alloa and Malibu next. Nothing had any chance with the winner. Aube, the second horse, is a five-vear-old'half-brother by Arausio to Toxeiima. Ruaville looked a bit unlucky, being a long way back early, but the whole, field was completely outcbisrcd by the winner, who had failed unaccountably at Marton during the week. '•Hunters Jump Well.

Tangled, favourite for the Hunt Cup, was prominent for a round, but then fell right, back and out of, the contest. The twelve runners gave a fine exhibition of jumping, but the race was won decisively by Miss Pango. She was always in or near the front, and finally had clear charge over the last fence for a comfortable win from a rank outsider in Stroller. Stroller put in a fast moveover the last six furlongs, but a bad jump earlier had set him back. Indiscretion, who was near to ,<>r with, the winner throughout. Taura Lad, The Drone, and Paliiko, did best of the others. The winner, a half-sister to Pahu, jumped well. Clnai-iini'o frnofiirnd n fetlock and was

destroyed. Won All the Way. Dungarvan was backed as a certainty for the Palmerston North Handicap, but after being hard held in behind the leader, Silver Brier, for six furlongs, he failed conspicuously to run on. . They practically presented the race to Silver Brier, allowing her unchallenged freedom out in front. She was six lengths to the good with six furlongs to go, and then was eased a little, but. over the final stages she again drew away. West Tor moved up on the turn, and later Lapel came along, but they had no chance cf getting the leader, and they lowed home by Manawatu, Arctic King, Peter Jackson, Dungarvan and Mustang. Dungarvan failed badly, and although he would probably have done better had he been allowed more freedom early, it

looked doubtful on the way he closed up if he would have seen it out. Silver Brier did her work really well, and mny have won even if the others had made an effort to get to her earlier. Manawatu ran a great race for a jumper, and drew attention to his National prospects. Arctic King ran a long way below form. Fresh Horse Class was moderate in the hack sprint, and a fresh runner in Finnesko scored decisively. He got out well, was always handy, and after allowing Racemosus to head'him to the turn, came away from his field in the straight. The favourite, De Trop, just squeezed home for second from Terry, and the best of the others were Cloudy Bay and Quake. The winner has not done much racing this term, but showed promise as a two-year-old. De Trop ran consistently, and was n bit unlucky in getting crowded entering the straight. Terry ran a creditable race. A Solid Mare.

Passion Flower won the Mcßno Handicap in wlid style. In on the fence behind the leaderH, Snowball and Miss ITushabyc. to the straight. who came through on the inner to beat Pukeko, juFt or the latter had run up prominently on the outer. Ptikeko weakened visibly at the finish and had a narrow call from Supreme Court, who did not get a good run entering the straight. Full Throttle, Snowball ahd Mis*? H livable were next. Supreme Court looked unlucky. Koya! Secret was well backed, but she was beaten on the turn. Host mi wed the jump out, losing ground, and on going up near the half got *?ent back again. An Improving Winner. Lp Grand, a solid favourite for the concluding event, never flattered his supporters. In the rear early, he eventually

finished fourth, but never gave evidence of doing better. Sunder lost ground at the start,, the pace being made by Otauru King, W arehi and Taumau were moving past I lie leaders on the turn, and this pair drew away to fight out a ding-dong finish. Warehi finally prevailing. Tail Light was a moderate third, followed by Le Grand and Otauru King. The winner is improving. Tail Bight had every chance and the others were not good enough. Blue Garter ran a very bad race. Details of the Racing LADIES' BRACELET HANDICAP. of £6O; second £lO, third £o. Qualified hunters. Gentlemen riders. One mile 1 C. a ßoyle’T'br. tC g.
