FINE CLUB-ROOM
South African War Veterans Comradeship boru on troopship, in bivouacs on the African veldt and in other ways associated with the Boer War brought nearly 60 veterans and their wives to the new club-room of the Wellington South African War Veterans’ Association, Lambton Quay, when it was officially opened on Saturday night. Well-appointed and equipped with mementoes and photographs to help members in recalling their adventurous times together, the club-room was described by the president, Captain J. J. Clark, as intended to be a “home away from home.” The photographs are arranged beginning with those depicting incidents and occasions prior to the departure for South Africa. Scenes en route to and in South Africa follow. Declaring the new club-room open. Captain Clark referred to the association’s activities in helping veterans who had met misfortune. Just under £lOO had been so disposed of in the last annual period, which was a good deal when it was taken into account that the association received £27 from the Government and a like amount from the Bose Day collection. Not a penny of these two grants was touched for any other purpose than to help less fortunate comrades, said Captain Clark. Their association went back 36 years, but the older they got tbe more they wanted to meet and have fun together said Major P. de B. Brandon.
