PROGRESS OF NEW GUINEA
Australian Minister’s
Impressions (Received July 25. 1.5 a.m.) Sydney, July 24. The- Minister of Customs (Mr. T. W. White), who has returned from a tour of New Guinea and Papua, declared that a large influx of white settlers was most desirable to develop the enormous potentialities of New Guinea, which was in the nature of Australia’s northern frontier. Mr. White’s outstanding impression after a six weeks’ tour was the efficiency of the aviation services, which had already played a large part in the development of agricultural and mining resources in this rich country. He found the natives well cared for, both in New Guinea and Papua. They wore protected by humane labour ordinances and appeared happy and contented. Many were so well trained that they were engaging in forms of employment requiring skill. Mr. White paid a. tribute to tlie excellent administration of the territories, which was all the Australian Government could desire.
