STAYING SIRES

Colossus and The Greek The recent successes and first-class form of the three-year-old Dungarvan draws attention to the fact that his sire. Colossus, will stand the season at Mr. A. F. Lawrie's stud, Boundary Road East, Palmerston North, at the modest fee of 20 guineas. Colossus is by one of England’s most successful sires, Polymelus, and his pedigree contains a double strain of the Musket taproot. He raced prominently in England, and went out of training a sound horse. His stock have been good winners, with the characteristic that they stay well and improve with age. King Colossus, Big Dook, Collision, Gay Boy, Leo Colossus, Prince Colossus, Rustem, Maestro and Colossian are among his winners, with Dungarvan outstanding in recent mouths. Collstar is a recent winner in Australia.

Colossus is bred on very similar lines to Silverado, the sire of Silver Scorn, Silver Ring, and others. They are both by Polymelus, and the dam of Colossus is by Sunder (son of Sundridge), while the dam of Silverado is by Sundridge himself. There is thus a very close similarity in the breeding of Silver Ring and Dungarvan, and Colossus should produce other good horses from marea of the same taproot. The success of the Valaio blood in Australia, especially through Heroic, has been an outstanding feature of Australian racing during the past decade, and Mr. Lawrie’s importation of The Greek will interest breeders. The Greek is by Thracian, a full brother to Heroic, from an All Black mare, Myuna, a combination of blood which resulted in the la-t V.R.C. Derby winner, Feldspar. The Greek, who is a handsome chestnut of 16 hands, was selected for Mr. Lawrie by Mr. Andy Robertson, one of Australia s greatest judges of horseflesh. To this family belongs Fortune Hunter, winner of the Sydney Cup and other good races, also first-class horses like Kennaquhair, Sea Prince and Slue Spec.
