Sir—The Hon. Minister of Mines, in the course of his remarks at Onmaru concerning certain gold-mining companies which he did not name, stated that Ned Kelly was a Sunday school teacher compared with some company promoters in the past.” He also said that the Government would spend £1.000,000 on goldmining during the coming 18 months. . Although the public of this Dominion is 1 getting accustomed to the speeches or certain prominent Ministers of the Crown in which threats are freely distributed, T will do no barm at this stage to ask the Hon. Minister of Mines; (1). What mining companies he alluded to in connection with the above remarks/ and (2) when he stated that the Government was going to spend £1,009,000, was it not a fact that a large Australian firm had stated-that it would be prepared to expend this'amount on certain .stipulated conditions, among which is the installation of \power from Lake Cole ridge at a cost to the taxpayers of this Dominion of £17'3,000? When these questions are satisfactorily answered we dan get down to bedroek regarding other important mining anomalies.—l am, ENGINEER. Auckland; July 20.
