Price Movements At Yesterday’s Sales

The second successive heavy .yarding of fat sheep at Addington yesterday saw a sharp fall in values, best ewes being dQwn 4/- as compared with last week, and good wethers 3/-. _ On the other hand, store sheep values wore maintained, 31/6 being paid for a small pen of ewes. Fat cattle showed a weakening in the early stages of the sale, but later best sorts recovered. Last week’s enhanced prices were fully maintained at Stortford Lodge, particularly for cattle and fat. sheep. Cattle were firm at Westfield yesterday, best beef making 30/- per 1001 b. Sheep met a keen demand, values rising 2/- a head, while lambs were very firm. Pig values advanced, but calves eased somewhat. At Burnside both cattle and sheep values were down at the commencement, but firmed as the sale progressed. Bad weather at Wanganui, saw store sheep and pigs easier with only a moderate demand for dairy cattle. Eat sheep advanced. Prime cattle at Johnsonville advanced 5/- to 10/- a head. Wethers were slightly up, with ewes and prime lambs firm.

Fat sheep fell sharply at Addington today, best ewes being to 4/- cheaper and good wethers 3/- The yarding was the second heavy one in succession. Values were:—Extra prime heavy wethers, to 43/4; prime heavy, 20/- to 32/6; prime medium weight, 26-/ to 2S/6; medium. 23/6 to 25/-; light, to 23/-; extra prime heavy ewes, to 34/7; prime heavy, 24/6 to 28/-; prime medium weight, 22/6 to 24/-; ordinary, 20/- to 22/-; light, to 10/6. Store sheep: A smaller entry, but a good offering of ewes. For the best over 30/- was paid and one small pen of 4, 6 and 8-tooth made 34/6. Prices were fully up to last week, and better for young sorts. Wethers were a small entry, and sold strongly. ■

Eat cattle: An entry of 455, with a bigger proportion of good beef. A few trucks came forward from Southland. Earlier in the sale values were weaker by 10/- a head, and though at the end better class beef recovered, others did not. Extra prime heavy steers made to £l6 17/6, prime heavy £ll/10/- to £l3/5/-, prime medium weight £9/10/- to £ll, ordinary £5/15/- to £B/10/-, light to £5 5/-, extra prime heifers made to £ll 17/6, prime £6/5/- to £9, medium £4 15/- to £6, light to £4/10/- ; extra prime cows, to £l2/7/6, prime £5/10/- to £S, medium £4/5/- to £5/5/-, light and aged £4. The vealcr entry was small, and of inferior quality. Values recovered the drop of 5/- last week for best, and less for other sorts. Store cattle: A firm sale with a good demand for quality. Dairy cattle: An entry of moderate class and a dull sale at a 10/- easing. Fat pigs: The entry of porkers was large, and the price easier. Baconers were firm. Choppers made to £6/6/-, porkers 30/6 to 46/6; average, 54d. to 6d. per lb. Baconers, 49/6 to 9S/6; average 5Jd. to 6d. per lb. Burnside Sale Dunedin, July 22.

There were 291 fat cattle yarded for the weekly sale at Burnside, the entry consisting principally of medium quality bullocks with only a few consignments of heavy sorts. The sale opened with prices for bullocks 15/- to £1 down on last week, with cows and heifers about 10/- easier. Country butchers and graziers competed later in the sale, and the opening drop was recovered over the final races.

In the fat sheep section there was a large entry of 2400, consisting principally of ewes with only odd consignments of wethers, lloggets were forward in larger numbers than recently. The sale opened with slack competition, wethers showing a decline of 1/- a head, and all classes of ewes about 3/-. Outside competition had a beneficial effect, and as the sale progressed prices recovered. There was a small yarding of 101 fat

pigs, with equal proportions of baconers and- porkers. The sale opened firmly, prices appreciating about 3/- to 5/- a head. The entry of store pigs totalled 60, a complete clearance being made at satisfactory rates.

The'entry of 60 dairy cows included few young close to profit sorts, the best price obtained for these being £9. Store cattle numbered about 200. Improved prices for female cattle last week attracted big yardings at Stortford Lodge to-day, when the previous week’s rise of up to 20/- a head ' was maintained. Prime heavy bullocks made £lO to £ll/15/-; a Drumpeel draft of 32 averaged £lO/18/9. A new high level for prime was realised for both prime heavy cows and heifers, cows making to £8 17/- and best heifers £9. Competition for all sorts was keen, being stimulated byoutside buyers. A large percentage of the store sheep consisted of woolly and shorn hoggets, with little alteration in prices. Several travelled lots were included, but did not attract. Fair to medium breeding ewes made up to 25/6. Fat sheep showed a further advance on the previous week’s greatly improved fates. Prime heavy ewes made up to 31/1, being top price realised for a considerable time. Lighter brought 25/- to 27/- and prime wethers up to 30/-. Westfield Market Auckland, July 22. The cattle stalls were better filled at Westfield to-day than for many weeks past. There was a definite improvement in the quality offered, and recent values were maintained. The best bullock brought £l5/5/-, equalling last week’s substantial individual advance. Extra choice ox beef sold to 30/- 1001 b.; choice and prime, 26/- to 28/-; secondary and plain. 23/- to 25/-. Prime young cow and heifer, 26/- to 28/-; ordinary cow, 15/- to 22/-. Palmerston North, July 22. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having conducted a special dispersal sale at the Bulls saleyards on behalf of Mr. G. Hamish Wilson, of Buffs, when the Burleigh Jersey stud was submitted to a fair attendance of buyers. The offering came forward in good condition, and although some of the cows were carrying a little age, there was good competition throughout, with practically a total clearance. The cow Burleigh Fannie, born -in September, 1928, with a butterfat record of 5331 b., recorded the top figure of 16 guineas. Other cow prices are as follows: From 7, 8, BJ, 9J, 12; 13J to 14J guineas; two-year springing heifers, SJ, 71, 6f and 8J guineas; yearling heifers, 21, 4, 4|, 5} and 6& guineas; five-year bull, 6 guineas; four-year bull, 8 guineas; twoyear bulls, 6} to 7 guineas.

At the weekly sale conducted at Levin by Abraham and Williams, Ltd., yesterday, there were small yardings of all stock presented, and prices remained firm on late rates, with the exception of pork, which showed a marked increase on previous realisations. Ltd. The bullocks comprised a few pens of extra heavy-weight cattle, the balance being medium light-weight and unfinisned sorts. Competition was keen for all prime quality bullocks, .while unfinished cattle were hard, to quit and in some cases unsaleable. Prime bullocks were 5/ to 10/per head firmer, and medium and unfinished showed no alteration in prices. The yarding of cows was of mixed quality, but only prime sorts were wanted. Prices - for good quality cattle were firm on late rates, with unfinished slightly easier,' There was a small yarding- of vealers which met with spirited competition, prices being 10/- per head up on last. week.
