Where Does the Money Come From?

Sir, —I have been paying close attention to the horde of letters about finance appearing in your very democratic correspondence column, and am sorry that the answer to the above query is not plainly given by any of these practical experts. We have here a demonstration of how vital information is withheld from those most entitled to full knowledge. We have in our midst so-called democratic Government consisting of a number of men elected and paid to manage public affairs A majority of these men have quietly agreed together to do everything the remainder object to. They have taken possession of the machinery of government and are concealing vital factors from their opponents. What I mean is: We have a small but important section of our rulers who are experienced in law-making and finance, and are just aching to put this knowledge into practice, but they cannot find out where the money comes from. The present party in power will not tell therm The newspapers, of course, are divided in their opinions. The bankers, jealous of trade secrets, are suspected of not being quite straight in their explanations. What are we to do to help? How can we save His Majesty’s Opposition from stumping the country making speeches about nothing, and marking time until someone comes forward and answers this question in a form acceptable to at least some people? What I really mean is: Why the dickens doesn’t the Government tell' the members of the Opposition where the money comes from and ease their minds? They could then write to the papers and tell everybody the truth. They could get busy reconstructing a platform far better than the present aims of the Government, and be of some use to the community. I think that to see a number of men of the calibre of the leaders of the Opposition gallantly fighting windmills and leading the blind handicapped in such a humiliating fashion is to get a new line on the dogged British character. What 1 want to know is: Do the heads of the Government intend to keep these men permanently in the dark or are they to be told at the same time as the general body of the electors?--! am, etc., JEREMIAH. Paraparaumu, July 19.
