RECORD CROWD

Final Day of Wanganui Meeting

TOTALISATOR INCREASE

Windsor Lad Again Wins Steeplechase

By Telegraph—From. The Watcher. Wanganui,. June 23. Favoured by fine weather,, the Wanganui Jockey Club winter.meeting concluded very successfully to-day. There was a record crowd, the gatea being nearly doubled compared with, the second day last year, while there was • also a substantial increase in the totalisutor investments’. Windsor Lad repeated Ids- first day’s performance by winning the Wanganui Steeplechase and One Wbetu again had to put up with second place in the principal flat race, being beaten this time by Alchemic. The May Hurdles was won by Silk Sox, and the open sprint saw Farmer narrowly defeat his stable-mate Mother*' Superior. The totalisator figures for the day were £20,634/10/-, compared with £12,307 .10/- on the Saturday last year. The total for the meeting was £33,037/10/-, against £21,991, an increase of £11,016/10/-. The jockey H. Maria, rider of Triune in the Purua Hack, was suspended for a month for careless riding which caused interference to Bantry.

Suitprise to Start. Middle brought off a surprise in the hack sprint, but he won well after the favourites Bantry and Triune had had their chances extinguished by interference. Triune and Bantry both began well, with Taillight, Script and The Sandwich Man. Bantry was the first to get knocked back, and Taillight drifted to the rear later. Triune leaving The Sandwich Man and Script to lead Middle and High Test. The Sandwich Man ran into the lead at the top of the straight, but Middle ran him down in the run home, and The Sandwich Man just stalled off a late run home by Taillight. High Test, Bantry and Triune were next. The winner had won only one previous race, at Feilding in December, and had no form recommendations, but on this he should win more. Taillight looked very unlucky to lose ground in the running, while the topweights were also unfortunate. Slashing Finish. Farmer won the open sprint in a slashing finish with his stable-mate, Mother Superior, who was just a bit unlucky, as she left the, fence and let the winner through. Land Tax, Mother Superior, and later Bazaine with them, led Farmer, Diatomous, and Limulus. Farmer drew up on the rails on the turn, and he and Mother Superior had a ding-dong go, with Diatomous pushing up on the outer. Farmer just shaded Mother Superior at the post, and. Diatomous was right up. Gold Mission finished well from the rear into fourth place. Farmer, who was favourite, won brilliantly, but he was lucky to get through on the rails. Mother Superior showed improvement and should come back to her best. Diatomous ran a very solid race. Promising Newcomer. The May Hurdle Race was featured by a very promising display by the newcomer. Ethiop, who might have beaten the - favourite, Silk Sox, had he not made one very bad jump. Silk Sox and Teddy Boy made the running well clear of Ethiop, with Saltspray heading the others. The pace was fast, and at the end of six furlongs Ethiop

clouted the stand fence very hard, knocking it flat. Silk Sox dropped in behind Teddy Boy for a furlong, and then went up again'. He led over the last half, but Ethiop was on terms at the last fence. Ethiop had, however, shot his bolt, and Silk Sox drew away again for a decisive win. was a fair third, followed by Saltspray and Soloist, with Sporting Song last. The winner won well. Ethiop should make good at the game, as this was his first public experience. Decisive Win. The win of Supreme Court in the Champion Hack was very decisive. Handy early, he ran into the sole lead on the turn and gave nothing else a chance. The favourite, Hunting- Queen, hung on well under pressure and gained second narrowly from Waipiro. but she never threatened the winner. Mustang ran another sound race in third place. Le Grand again failed. Windsor Lad Lucky. Windsor Lad was a trifle fortunate in the Wanganui Steeplechase. He jumped without his usual dash in the first round, and was nearly down once, but he then warmed up and went better. Cometra, however, was a dangerous opponent, waiting her time, when she went out at the fence half a mile from home. This left Invictus the only passible challenger to Windsor Lad, who was well clear at the last fence. He tired badly, however, and Invictus was gathering him fast at the finish. Manawatu and Forest Glow, who found the pace so solid, were next well back. Kaola tossed out at the same fence as Cometra. Coinetra looked unlucky, as she would undoubtedly have been hard to beat. Windsor Lad did better when he warmed up, but he does not look a solid stayer. Invictus is improving. Alchemic’s Connolly. The topweight, One Whetu, made a great bid for victory in the. Connolly Handicap, and went under only by the narrowest of margins to Alchemic, to whom be was conceding 301 b. This pair were always well placed in behind the pacemaker, Velocipede, Jubilee Song, Takakua, West Tor and Davistock also showing up. Alchemic and One Whetu fought out the finish, the lightweight just squeezing home. Peter Jackson, who had been well back early, came solidly at the finish for third, with Davistock, Tahurangi, Velocipede and Takakua next. The honours were with the topwejght. Alchemic improved with bis race the first day. Hazoor to-day was always well back, but he never got an opening over the concluding stages when the field bunched in front of him. Won All the Way. Landlubber won all the way in the concluding event. Happy Hunting went with him to Ihe straight, where she retired, and Landlubber ran on and won from Erebus, who finished with a strong late run after getting slowly away. Triune and The Sandwich Man, having their .second races on the day, were both bandy, and Happy Hunting next. Erebus was a certainty beaten.
