Illustrated Lantern Lecture
‘•The Solar System and its Origin" was the subject of an informative address given in the Wellington Town Hall concert chamber hist night by Mr A. C. Gifford, M.A., F.R.A.S. Every Seat was occupied. Mr. Gifford illustrated his lecture with a series of lantern slides. The chairman of the Observatory committee of the City Council, Mr. M. F. Luckie, who presided, referred to the Carter bequest, and said the great objective of the late Mr Carter to have an observatory estab lished at Wellington was at least with in measurable distance. Mr. Gifford said the earth was one of the smaller planets of the solar system. The attention of-the whole world would be focused on Saturn at the end of the present month, for on June 30 its rings would disappear. These rings disappeared every 15 years. Between .June and December the sun would be on the other side of the rings.,
