Commenting on the spring weights, the “Sydnev Morning Herald” says“ With the retirement of Peter, Pan and Hall Mark, Sylvandale'is left the acknowledged champion of horses five years old and over. The handicappers agree that Feldspar i 3 the best four-year-old, and Gold Rod is graded the best three-year-old. Gold Rod ha s 7.10 in the Melbourne Cup, and the closest to him of his own age is the New Zealand colt Cuetos with 7.7.” The “Daily Telegraph” says:—“The handicapper in the Melbourne Cup weight.’ has rated Gold Rod one of the greatest colts that has ever raced in Australia. He has been given four pounds more than Phar Lap carried when as a three-year-old he could run only third.”
