Radio Programmes

Sir,—Some of the notes under the heading “The Radio Listener” in “The Dominion” a couple of days ago were excellent and to the point. The “obese gentleman” referred to has just drawled through another of those dreadful “Easy Chair” records, and just before that the terrible “House-boy” offended the average British colonial ear. That awful youth has been attempting to speak English, or American, for about a couple of years—it’s about time he learnt one of the other languages. It is to be supposed that the tyije of humour portrayed is all right for Americans, but. surely there can’t be many people in New Zealand who are really amused by the inanities of “Frank”' and the stutterings of America’s idea of a titled English gentleman.

It is to be hoped there are no storekeepers in New Zealand like those two drivelling arrangements, —Eb and Zeb”; anyway, they sound too much like some of the Parliamentary broadcasts to be amusing or interesting.—l am, etc., DANCING DICKWellington, June 21.

Sir, —A letter appeared in a recent issue of “The Dominion” suggesting that the difficulty of pleasing listeners could be overcome by each station supplying its own type of music; so that if a listener wanted high-class items he tuned into the high-class station, and so on. The letter was signed “Common Sense,’’ which seemed suitable, but there is a hitch. How about the owners of crystal sets who can get only 2YA and incidentally have to pay the same licence as the listener who can tune in all over the world? Their choice might be reduced to such “entertainment” as the Parliamentarians discussing each other's past, or “Eb and Zeb,” “The Arm Chair,” mouth organ solo«, or other noises. As things are at present the crystal set owner can glean a certain amount of pleasure. But that licence fee is very unfair And should be reduced to 10/- for crystal sets—l *"' CRYSTAL. Johnsonville, June 21.
