WIMBLEDON SEEDING

German Sporting Paper’s

Attack

PROXIMITY OF CRAWFORD AND VON CRAMM

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright,

(Received June 21. 7 p.m.)

Berlin, June 20.

The sporting newspaper “Twelveuhr Blatt” criticises the Wimbledon seeding draw, bringing von Gramm and Crawford together in the quarter-finals, making it most difficult for the German and easier for Perry to reach the last four. Nevertheless it is confident that von Gramm will repeat his Paris triutnph against Perry. The “Evening News,” commenting on the “Twelveuhr Blatt’s” attack on the seeding, points out that the draw was made in accordance with the regulations, resulting in Perry being seeded No. 1 and placed at the top of the draw and von Cramm No. 2 at the bottom’. Crawford, seeded sixth, had to take a place in the section unoccu pied by the seeded players previously drawn and in accordance with their nationality in order to keep players of the same country as distant as possible. There was no other place for Crawford as the draw worked out except bottom in the seventh section, thus the. proximity of Crawford and von Cramm was fortuitous.

Prenn, Hare, Lee and Wilde, although good, Should make little impression against Crawford. This will be Crawford’s' first encounter with von Cramm on • grass courts,. but it is by no means a foregone conclusion that the German will be victorious. F. J. Perry will open at the centre court against the American Stratford. C. E., Malfroy (New Zealand) will play on the No. 1 court against Kukul Jevic (Czechoslovakia). Perry is a firm favourite for the title. Miss Helen Jacobs (America) is the favourite for the women’s singles.
