Midwinter Swimming Race
With the temperature of the water at 49 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday morning, ten hardy enthusiasts tried hard to look as if enjoying themselves when competing in the annual mid winter swimming race for the Davenport Cup and trophies at the Te Aro baths, Wellington. Luckily for those who gathered to watch the contest, the sun was shining brightly, but it was nevertheless none too warm standing about. The race was a handicap over a dis tance of 50 yards, and the winner, C. Baynes, himself in receipt of three seconds start from the scratch man, was giving away up to 12 seconds to the other competitors. Fastest time, 35 seconds, was made by S. King off scratch, who finished third. The plaeings were: —C. Baynes (3 sec.), 1; E. Pateman (4sec.), 2; S. King (scr.), 3. t Also started: McGowan, 16 sec.; 0. Somerville, llsec.; W. Waters and R. Packman, lOsec.; D. Boolieris, 5 sec.; L. Fitt and G. Neal, 4sec.
